Marathon Factions to use a Marathon Contract Sherpa
All Six Marathon Factions

If you jumped into the Server Slam for Marathon and felt overwhelmed, you’re not alone.

Whether you’re coming from Escape from Tarkov, Arc Raiders, or you’re here for the gunplay legacy behind Halo and Destiny, Marathon takes pieces from each to hit differently.

This Marathon guide breaks down:

  • What progression looks like in Marathon
  • Why Faction Upgrades matter more than gear
  • How to approach contracts efficiently
  • How to find help via Contract Sherpas

If you understand these systems early, Marathon becomes far less punishing, tons more fun, and far more rewarding. If you get stuck don’t hesitate to get assistance from a Marathon Contract Sherpa either.

Marathon Guide Tip: Gear Is Temporary but Faction Upgrades Are Forever

The biggest mistake new players make in Marathon is thinking it plays like Destiny in terms of progression. While Marathon and Destiny share the amazing gunplay, Marathon is designed for loot to be gotten and lost.

Marathon is a PvPvE extraction shooter. You will:

  • Earn gear through looting, defeating UESC, and coming out on top of PvP encounters.
  • Lose gear through boss encounters, other player squads on the map, and lockdowns.
  • Rebuild gear through sponsored kits, loot focused runs, and outplaying other players in PvP.
  • Risk it again for difficult contracts, map dominance, or take on difficult lockdown waves.

Your real progression comes from Faction Upgrades, reputation levels, and account unlocks instead of the weapon in your hands.

If you treat gear like permanent power, you’ll get frustrated. Through Factions you will find easier ways of rebuilding and obtaining your desired weapon types, mods, and Shell core and implant upgrades
If you treat gear like leverage and a temporary setback, you’ll start improving in Marathon much more quickly. You will lose your gear at some point, learning that early saves lots of frustration.

Understanding gear comes and goes and the power of factions will shift alone will completely change your experience especially if you are a progression oriented gamer.

Marathon Guide Tip: You’re Supposed to Die (And will Die A LOT)

Every uplink into your Shell in Marathon is a calculated risk.

Some squads load in with stacked kits. Others use sponsored loadouts that cost nothing. Strategy can go a long way to turning the tables no matter what end of the gear loadout you’re rocking.

Yes stronger gear improves your odds but positioning, patience, and timing win just as many fights.

During the Server Slam, we consistently saw:

  • Underdog teams win through flanks especially if one squad member is carrying a WSTR Combat Shotgun.
  • Players avoid unnecessary fights and extract smarter. Knowing you are low on ammo, heals or outclassed weapon type and not fit a fight is perfectly fine, just watch your back as you exit.
  • Scrappy loadouts can often outperform expensive ones due to confidence

Fear of losing gear changes how you play. The aggressiveness of your green gear can take down those that are nervous and risking a loadout of purple or gold gear.
Faction Upgrades reduce that fear because rebuilds become easier.

And that’s where real momentum starts with the game. Unlocking the ability to purchase a WSTR Combat Shotgun from the Arachne in the Armory changed my PvP experience entirely.

Faction Upgrades: The Core of Marathon Progression

Marathon launches with six factions:

  • Cyberacme (CyAc)
  • NuCaloric
  • Traxis
  • Arachne
  • Sekiguchi (SekGen)
  • MIDA

Every faction offers:

  • Contracts
  • Reputation ranks
  • Faction Upgrades
  • Unlockable rebuild access
  • Account-wide improvements

If you ignore Faction Upgrades early, especially the starting faction (Cyberacme), progression will feel slow and punishing since you won’t have free, cheap, or ready access to backpacks, heatsinks (Shell heat upgrades), and shield/health packs.

Look at each faction to see where you may want to focus but set a realistic goals and go for them! If you see an upgrade requires a certain amount of grey or green material then hover over that material and mark them for tracking. Prioritize that item until you have enough for your goal.

If you focus them early, the game opens up.

Marathon Guide: Contract Strategy & Tips

Contracts are the engine behind Faction Upgrades.

The Marathon Wiki page should be updated often on launch to help you find out more about each contract a Faction has.

Important rule: You can only carry one contract at a time.

However, squads can stack contracts.

If running a trio:

  • Each player grabs a contract
  • Stay together
  • Complete all three in one run if possible

Helping teammates finish contracts boosts overall efficiency of a Run. If your squad is moving well and has the ammo, health, and gear to survive the loot only gets better the longer you stay. A Marathon Contract Sherpa often utilize doing full squad contracts to get you leveled up quickly.

If you’re undergeared, that’s often the best time to push objectives near the end of the Exfil timer as you have less to lose. Most contracts from the Server Slam don’t have extraction requirements so even if you’re squad is wipes you’ll get that Faction reputation.

Cyberacme: The Smart First Investment

Cyberacme is your starting faction and one of the most important for early Marathon progression.

Focus: Utility & Heat Management

Key Faction Upgrades include:

  • Faster ability cooldowns
  • Heat reduction improvements
  • Vault storage expansion
  • Credit wallet expansion

Vault space may not sound exciting until you start extracting consistently especially with the occasional Rook run.

If you hoard gear (like most Destiny 2 players and other gamers in general do) upgrading Vault space early is one of the smartest moves in this Marathon guide.

Recommended early path:

  • Unlock 1 or 2 Vault expansions to hold 250+ squares worth of loot.
  • Grab a few Heat_Sink.exe upgrades to make your Shell operate more smoothly.
  • Expand wallet capacity so you don’t max out and lose out on your extracted loot.

These Faction Upgrades may not look flashy, but are extremely good quality of life upgrades they compound quickly. Our Marathon Contract Sherpas offer bundles to do early game account upgrades like these to optimize your gameplay and time.

    NuCaloric: Shield Sustain Builds

    Focus: Shields & Survivability

    Faction Upgrades provide:

    • Blue-tier shields
    • Faster healing speeds
    • Free Shield Chargers

If you want fewer reset runs and stronger sustain, NuCaloric is a solid choice.

    Traxis: Long-Range Advantage

    Focus: Precision & Economy

    Faction Upgrades unlock:

    • Sniper rifles
    • Precision rifles
    • Advanced optics

If your playstyle favors distance control, Traxis offers consistent value.

    Arachne: Aggressive PvP Pressure

    Focus: Close-Range Domination

    Faction Upgrades include:

    • Faster time-to-kill buffs
    • Increased melee damage
    • Access to LMGs and Shotguns

Shotguns are extremely strong right now.
If you like pushing fights, Arachne fits perfectly.

    Sekiguchi (SekGen): Ability Synergy

    Focus: Runner Abilities & Cores

    Faction Upgrades unlock:

    • Class-specific Cores
    • Shell ability enhancements

Great for players building around ability-focused playstyles.

    MIDA: Mobility & Disruption

    Focus: Movement & Explosives

    Faction Upgrades include:

    • Faster movement
    • Higher jumps
    • Grenades and area denial tools

If you like flanking and creative positioning, MIDA rewards that style.

When to Use a Contract Sherpa

Sometimes you you hit a wall and can’t progress certain needed contracts for upgrades.

    A Contract Sherpa helps you:

    • Complete difficult faction contracts that may be required to unlock Factions or certain upgrades.
    • Farm required materials and reputation faster, saving you time.
    • Level Faction Upgrades efficiently so you have the unlocks you want more quickly.
    • Reduce unnecessary losses, build up gear and materials, and more!

If you’re stuck on progression, using a Contract Sherpa can accelerate your Marathon guide path significantly.

Instead of wasting hours on failed runs, you can have the Faction upgrades that reduce the pain of a Squad wipe.

    Contract Completed But What’s Next?

    After Contract Thoughts:

    • Does my contract require extraction?
    • Do I have gear and materials I really need?
    • What should I focus on before extraction?
    • Do I engage in PvP?

These are the type of questions you should be asking yourself after completing contracts. If your contract has an extraction requirement, get out so you don’t have to restart.

If you aren’t risking much gear but have ample supplies, picking a fight with a difficult late game UESC enemy may be worth getting some good material and possibly weapon upgrades.

Focus on stackable green gear, grey gear needed for early Faction upgrades or health/shield packs or blue and purple items that are primarily for credits on extraction. Once you dip your toes into the Dire Marsh you’ll see more of these materials and its the type of items outside of upgrade items you should prioritize before getting out.

If you ahve nothing to lose or if you think you have the advantage (especially if another team is bogged down by UESC) picking a PvP fight can be rewarding and provide an awesome rush of adrenaline. When there are 0-10 minutes left in a Run the UESC can be really fearsome and make players drop their guard, ambushing players you hear in a fight is a great way to end a run where you don’t mind losing materials or gear you’ve gotten on your current run.

Final Thoughts: The Real Marathon Guide Mentality

    Marathon rewards:

    • Risk management
    • Faction focus
    • Smart contract coordination
    • Emotional and frustration control

The faster you lean into Faction Upgrades and stop tying your confidence and progression to gear, the more enjoyable the game becomes.

This isn’t Destiny PvE and it’s not the crucible, instead you are encountering something different PvP and PvE wise each time you enter for a contract or for loot.

It’s an extraction shooter built around calculated risk and long-term progression.
